Redesigning WhatsApp around the people you talk to most
Oct 2026 · 2 min read
My chat list mixes family, clients, group chats and the person delivering lunch. Everything arrives with the same weight, so the people I care about get buried. This concept keeps WhatsApp familiar and changes three things.
Profiles
Personal and Work become profiles, each with its own list and its own highlights. You switch from the title at the top of Chats, so on a Sunday, work stays out of sight.
The highlights row
Up to ten people sit in a row above the list. A green ring means they sent something new, and it clears once you read it. A small badge means they posted a moment today. Edit lets you choose who stays.

Moments
Moments takes the place of Communities in the tab bar. It is a feed only for friends who chose each other back. A moment can be a photo, a place, a song, a thought, or just going to sleep. Replying to one opens your private chat with the moment quoted.
How it was made
I designed the screens in Figma on a small design system, then built them as a working HTML prototype, so every tap could be judged on a phone instead of in a static frame.
